Tonga Map

VAVA'U is considered by many to be one of the top travel destinations in Tonga. There are four island groups in the Kingdom of Tonga and Vava'u is located centrally. It comprises a main island plus numerous smaller islands - some elevated and some low-lying coral islets. The cluster of islands not only create a picturesque setting for any South Pacific vacation, but also the many safe anchorages, bays and inlets are ideal for yachts. For this reason, Vava'u is a sailing mecca for both International as well as local yachts.

Those who decide to travel to Vava'u will enjoy one of the best adventure vacations possible. Tour operators in the main town of Neiafu offer a variety of day trips for fishing, diving, whale-watching (seasonal) and island cruises. On the main island a climb to the lookouts on nearby Mount Talau is popular. Taxi drivers will also drive you to other picturesque lookouts around the island.

Vava'u is pronounced by the Tongans as vah-vah-oo, with the emphasis on the middle syllable. However, the oft heard va-vow is understood and accepted.
