Neiafu Vava'u
The laid-back main street of Neiafu follows the waterfront and is dotted with restaurants, trendy cafes, gift shops, tour operators and small supermarkets. There are also several banks, a post office, duty free shops, colourful produce market and hotel accommodation. For maps and general visitor information of Vava'u, visit the Tourist Bureau right on the main street. The views of the sailing boats and surrounding islands creates a photogenic setting. Day trips for fishing, diving, whalewatching and island cruises can be organised from several operators.
As is the case throughout Tonga, everything closes on Sunday. This is the day when you will become most aware of the rich culture of the Tongan people. They are devoutly religious and on Sundays they dress up and go to the local Christian churches. Many wear the traditional matting overskirts. The Catholic St Joseph's Cathedral (Palokia 'o Sangato Sesefo ko e Tangata Ngaue) is a prominent landmark in the heart of Neiafu. However, a number of cafes and restaurants do open later in the day to serve evening meals and drinks.
Internet access can be obtained at hot spots. Ask at the cafes for details.
