Map of Vava'u
THE main island in Vava'u is called Vava'u Lahi and it is here on the mainland that can be found the airport and the main town of Neiafu. A number of islands are linked to the mainland by causeways, making access easier. Other islands are accessed by boat transfers, taking as little as 5 minutes up to about half an hour.
On the east, north and west of Vava'u Lahi are dramatic cliffs, where waves breaking against the coastline provide great views. A guided day trip to some of the lookouts such as Fungamatoto on the east coast and 'Utula'aina on the north coast. There is also a nice beach at the latter location but you will probably need a guide rather than go it alone. Signposts are a rarity! Go Kart Safaris are a fun way to spend your day and visit this spot. Their premises are on the Neiafu waterfront beside the Aquarium Cafe - which, by the way, is a great place to eat or enjoy an Italian coffee!
The smaller islands in the south of Vava'u are flatter and have lovely beaches. Resorts there offer beachfront accommodation, fishing, whalewatching and more. Idyllic locations for sunlovers and beachcombers!
